(Couture) hi.lite: Christian Dior

Raf Simons has quietly been building his reputation as one of the very best in the fashion world. He presented an amazing final collection for Jil Sander and moved from strength to strength in his first outing for Dior. Raf has taken the best of Dior’s aesthetic and its couture atelier and then layered his own sensibilities – the wave of fuschia on the back-side of an elaborately embroidered gown or a splash of yellow on a shoe paired with a feathered day dress. I’m excited for what he’ll do with ready-to-wear.

White was a favorite theme of mine in the Spring 2012 ready-to-wear shows, and here I am again highlighting it for the couture shows. Valentino is the stand-out this couture season. The show was ultra-feminine without devolving into cutesy which is such a tough balance. In contrast, the other shows this couture season were heavy handed. I also had to post a close-up on the shoes.  The feminine white lace and masculine shape of the footwear are marvelous counterpoints and complement the clothes to perfection. I wish I could see the clothes up-close! Beautifully played, Valentino.

PS. Anyone who can pull off a gown from this couture collection for the Oscar red-carpet will likely be the best-dressed winner. I’m hoping Charlize will try.
